The SRGC Journal

Written by SRGC

The Rock Garden 134  -   January 2015 - out now

cover 134

This issue draws your attention to the delights to be found in the North of Scotland and invites you to join the SRGC expedition there in 2015.

Elsewhere, there is a strong emphasis on practicalities and growing, with articles on the merits and raising of Cardiocrinum giganteum, Ornithogalum, Meconopsis, miniature daffodils and - a success from the club’s seed exchange - Fuchsia boliviana. Martin Carter (deceased) relates some of the realities behind his learning to grow alpines at Ardross House and Stan da Prato describes the way in which the club’s prize-winning exhibit at Gardening Scotland is put together.

From further afield, Liz Cole has been to the Kyoto Botanic Garden in Japan and Harry Jans continues the second section of his photo essay of his beautiful discoveries in Yunnan.

Among the show reports you will find many excellent photographs, with remarkable full page images supported by the Danner bequest. We are of course accustomed to seeing excellent photographs but we rarely see paintings of the plants we love; we are therefore fortunate to have an article by Anne Gilchrist that combines her love of native Scottish flowers with the insights of her own artistic ability.

Our advertisers have been generous with their support and their colourful and diverse advertisements conclude our enjoyment until the appearance of our next issue 135 in July 2015.

The Rock Garden
Issued twice per year to members, the 126 colour pages of The Rock Garden partner the online activities of the club. The journal is the usual mix of events, prizes, recollections, plant-hunting expeditions, hernia-inducing rock movements, perfect show plants, and book reviews. Its pages always aim to show the month to month activities of members and for many people these culminate in the definitive exhibits at our regular shows. Thanks to the effort of show secretaries and photographers, there are accounts of  shows at Blackpool,Stirling, Perth, Highland, Hexham and Glasgow.
