SRGC & RBGE: Talks & Tours The Diversity of European Alpines Conference Room, Science Building, 20a Inverleith Row, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Saturday 21st November 2026, 10am – 3.30 pm All welcome. Free admission
Over the past three years the SRGC and RBGE have sponsored a series of free, popular talks with a focus on alpine plants together with an opportunity of guided tours of the garden. This year we are delighted to announce that we will again be holding the event which will feature three talks from noted authorities focusing on the diversity of European Alpines plus a guided tour of the rock and alpine gardens.
Programme
10 am The Mountain Flowers of Britain In a richly illustrated talk, Alan Walker, a professional scientist and writer who has published a number of identification guides, discusses the remarkable strategies and adaptations that enable Britain’s upland plants to survive in the harsh conditions of mountain environments.
11 am The Flora of the Caucasus: a personal selection Michael Almond presents a personal exploration of the extraordinary plant diversity of the Caucasus, the transcontinental region between the Black and Caspian seas. Alongside its flora he shares, with his characteristic erudition, the rich history and culture of this fascinating crossroads between Eastern Europe and Western Asia.
12 pm Garden Tours A not-to-be-missed opportunity to be guided by John Mitchell and Scott Cook, two of the most knowledgeable and respected professional horticulturalists in the UK. There may also be the prospect of a sneak peek behind the scenes at the propagation area.
2 pm Plants of the Dolomites Cliff Booker is a popular and well-travelled lecturer, photographer, writer, and leader of botanical mountain walks. In this talk he guides us through the splendid, diverse plants and habitats of the Dolomites, the famous limestone range in north-eastern Italy.
3.20 pm Review & Close
Notes: This free event is open to all. Coffee/tea will be available all day for a small donation. Please feel free to bring a packed lunch: RBGE’s Gateway Café, Terrace Café and East Gate Coffee Bar will be open but are some distance from the Science buildings. The Science buildings are fully accessible to visitors.
