"The Plantsmen" Nursery Era (1967-1975) The Writings of Jim Archibald Jim through the eyes of others	Writings of Jim Archibald Many have said how effective a speaker Jim was; saying his talks were full of both knowledge and enthusiasm. Part of that success was down to the preparation he made for such events. 'The Enchanted Island' shows the preparation for a talk by Jim on Corsica, drafted in longhand in the very early 1960s. We also have some letters to Jim from the Ulster Group of the AGS, about his plant trips and arranging a visit from him to give this Talk: mention is made of his plans after graduation - he did become a teacher of sorts, but not in a school! Jim Archibald wrote a number of articles, and we have collated as many of these as possible. They are listed below in chronological order. Click the bold links to view copies of the actual articles. 1959 ‘Taste and Colour in the Rock Garden’, SRGC Journal 24/254. Along with a first handwritten draft of the article. Jim was aged 17 at this time. 1960 ‘Autumn Concerto’ published in the SRGC Journal 26/63. We also have a handwritten first draft of the Autumn Concerto article. Gardeners Chronicle In December 1965 Jim wrote two articles published in the magazine, Gardeners Chronicle, about his travels to Corsica in 1962. Gardeners Chronicle, a magazine which was founded in 1841 and included correspondence from Charles Darwin*(Darwin Correspondence Database) in its pages, has long been subsumed into Horticulture Week Magazine, published by Haymarket. We are pleased that Haymarket is supportive of the use by the Archibald Archive of the articles in their original layout. The American magazine, 'Horticulture' 2005 'Horticulture' published a two part article from Jim in December 2005 and we are pleased to have their support for this use.
